Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)
A 7-month window: the 3 months before your 65th birthday month, your birthday month itself, and the 3 months after. Enroll before your birthday month for coverage on day one of your birthday month — the smoothest path.
Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)
October 15 through December 7 every year. You can switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan, change Advantage plans, change Part D plans, or drop back to Original Medicare. Changes take effect January 1.

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (OEP)
January 1 through March 31. If you're already on a Medicare Advantage plan, you get one chance to switch to a different MA plan or go back to Original Medicare. This window does not apply to people on Original Medicare alone.
Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs)
- Moving to a new ZIP with different plan options.
- Losing employer or union coverage — a 2-month SEP for Part D or MA.
- Qualifying for Extra Help / Medicaid — quarterly SEPs to change plans.
- 5-star plan available in your area — switch any time, once a year.
- Plan termination — your carrier exits your county.
